Our first Mexican Independence Day or "Dia de la Independencia" as it's known in Mexico was a real treat! We're not typically ones to go seeking large crowds but we could hardly escape it here. For a while, we stayed at a restaurant near the action but just far enough away to not be overwhelmed by the celebration.
Unfortunately, we missed El Grito which roughly translates to "The Shout," an annual tradition in Mexico where the governor or another important political figure comes out onto the podium and yells "Viva Hidalgo! Viva Morelos! Viva Mexico!" and other such things. Basically, a celebration honoring the major figures in the fight for Mexican Independence.
Although we missed El Grito, we did not miss the concert that followed. So much energy and tons of fun!
The next day it was onto a Mexican military parade in Guadalajara, which was much more extensive and exciting than I imagined it would've been!
