"Soy"lent Green

"Soylent green is people!!!" Does it bother anyone else that the name of the movie, Soylent Green, begins with the infamous protein-packed, meat replacement soy? I bite into my beefless burger and smile at the reminiscent flavor it has to the whopper. The only thing that made transitioning to vegan easier is the sweet concoction of pea protein and soy products that replace meat. Vegans can literally find a replacement for just about anything, but that leaves the question- what exactly and I eating, where did it come from, and what effect does it have on my body?

The movie first debuted in 1973 and centers around the year 2022 when resources are low due to high populations in metropolitan areas, but the Soylent Corporation comes out with this food replacement called Soylent Green. A detective played by Charlton Heston discovers the secret and tries to warn others that this replacement is made of people.

I started wondering what are all the chemicals we eat? With the influx GMOs and other alterations made in labs across the globe, what would hold corporations accountable to provide the most nutritious replacement of meat? Why would they not cut corners? There are countless articles out there breaking down the GMO epidemic.

This is a call to action to ensure we hold Vegan companies accountable to not just use the lab and chemicals to replace meat, but to make sure the most natural, nutritious food is consumed.
