Recent Watchings

Here is my periodic update on what I have been watching.

Disenchantment

This animation directed by Simpsons creator Matt Groening takes place in a fairtale world where tomboy Princess Teabenie (aka Bean) goes through various adventures in the company of a not very bright elf and a sarcastic demon. There have been five seasons with the latest being the last ever. They wrapped up the various threads in the end.

This is a pretty violent show with various body parts being chopped off and other nasty deaths. I enjoyed it. The animation is fairly similar to Futurama with some parts using 3d computer graphics.

I generally like my viewing to fairly easy and this was just an enjoyable watch for me that subverts some of the standard themes of fantasy.

Lupin

If you like clever crime shows like Sherlock then Lupin may be your sort of thing. It takes the other side with the main character Assane Diop being a master criminal with a conscience who bases some of his escapades on a real series of classic French books. I have not read those, but it is not essential to enjoy this.

The first story was in two 'parts' of a few episodes and covered Assane's attempt to bring to justice the man responsible for his father's death. This time he is up against some mysterious criminals who want to blackmail him into working for them.

The actual crimes are very clever and it often goes back in time afterwards to show how they were set up.

I was talking to a French colleague who was not that impressed by the writing and acting, but he agreed it is fun. We watched with subtitles.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

This is an animated spin-off from the comic books and 2010 movie with most of the original cast doing the voices. It has some elements of the original story, but then spins off in a different direction.

The animation is similar to the comic with some Japanese anime elements. It is noisy and fun.

What is next?

Next up may be Marvel's Echo which spins off from Hawkeye and features a deaf Native American lead.

I also have season 2 of Game of Thrones on charity shop DVD. I am somewhat behind on that show.

There is lots more on my Netflix and Disney watchlists. I just do not spend that much time watching TV, so it takes me a while to get through anything. I always have something I can watch.

Happy viewing.
