Travel Tip: Velke Losiny, picturesque spa town with beautiful chateau

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will take you to a captivating little Moravian spa town, the town of Velke Losiny.

Located in the Olomouc Region, some 9 km (6 mi) outside the town of Sumperk, Velke Losiny is - despite its name ("velke" means "big" in English) - a small village with approximately 2,600 inhabitants.

Velke Losiny was founded in 13th century but it was in the second half of the 16th century, during the era of the noble Zerotin family, when the town flourished. The Zerotins built a majestic Renaissance chateau that is the most famous landmark of the town today. However, this impressive piece of architecture has some dark history too. At the end of the 17th century, the chateau was the site of numerous brutal witch trails that resulted in the death of 56 people.

Another thing that Velke Losiny is famous for is the thermal spa. Found in a large park, the spa offers several procedures and therapies for a number of illnesses. There are six hot springs reaching a temperature of up to 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit).

Since Velke Losiny is surrounded by breathtaking landscape of the nearby Jeseniky Mountains, the town is also very popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
