Travel Tip: Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, magnificent piece of neo-Gothic architecture

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will take you to one of the most impressive churches in Prague, the monumental Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Located at the Vysehrad Fortress above the right bank of the River Vltava, the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul is a large neo-Gothic church built in the late 11th century by the Czech king Vratislav II.

The basilica was originally built in the Romanesque architectural style but it was badly damaged by fire in 1249 and it was rebuilt several times after that. The current neo-Gothic appearance of the church dates back to the 1880s when it was renovated by Josef Mocker.

Right next to this majestic church, there is the Vysehrad Cemetery where many prominent Czech artists, politicians, sportsmen, scientists and other important figures are buried.

Since the whole Vysehrad complex is located on a large promontory above the Vltava River, the place also offers several great look-out spots with breathtaking panoramic views of Prague.
