From Ho-Chi-Minh-City (aka Saigon) a sleeper bus brings us up 1500 meters to Đà Lạt, the capital of the Lâm Đồng region in the central highlands.
Well, basically you could sleep in the bus if the driver wouldn’t honk all the time and drive like a rally driver. :D
Von Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt (aka Saigon) geht’s mit dem Schlafbus auf 1500 Meter Seehöhe nach Đà Lạt, der Hauptstadt der Lâm Đồng Region im zentralen Bergland.
Also theoretisch könnte man in dem Schlafbus schlafen, würde der Fahrer nicht ständig hupen und wie ein Rennfahrer fahren. :D
We had the worst spots lined up in the lower back shoulder to shoulder. ^^
After seven hours we arrive in Đà Lạt. And holy cow, is that cold! It’s like 11°C as we arrive!
We ditch the idea of walking and take a taxi which clearly had a crooked taxameter. I pay a lower price without discussion though.
Time for an actual rest. 6 am and the hostel let’s us check in - perfect!
Nach sieben Stunden kommen wir in Đà Lạt an. Und holy cow, ist es hier kalt! Es hat etwa 11°C bei Ankunft!
Wir verwerfen die Idee zu Fuß zu gehen und nehmen ein Taxi, das offensichtlich ein gezinktes Taximeter hat. Ganz ohne Diskussion zahle ich allerdings einen niedrigen Preis als angezeigt.
Jetzt wird’s Zeit für eine ordentliche Mütze Schlaf. 6 Uhr morgens und das Hostel lässt uns direkt einchecken - perfekt!

Đà Lạt - The Highlands
This city surprises me just as much as HCMC did. Influences of the french colonies are omnipresent. You can sense this european atmosphere throughout Đà Lạt - this might mostly be caused by the public parks and the architecture of some houses.
Big plus in Vietnam: decent baguettes everywhere.
The highlands are well known for waterfalls, lakes, caves, hiking trails and all this sort of stuff. Best is to grab a motorbike and so do we.
Diese Stadt überrascht mich ebenso sehr wie HCMC. Einflüsse der französischen Kolonie sind allgegenwärtig. Eine Art europäischer Flair ist in ganz Đà Lạt zu erahnen - das liegt vermutlich an den öffentlichen parks und der Architektur mancher Häuser.
Großes Plus in Vietnam: überall gibt’s ordentliches Baguette.
Das Bergland ist bekannt für Wasserfälle, Seen, Höhlen, Wanderstrecken und dergleichen. Am besten erkundet man all das per Motorrad - also leihen wir uns welche.

At the first stop I’m fairly bewildered to first spot a zebra and then some cowboys.
Looking closer I realise it’s just a painted horse and the cowboys are actually day drinking Vietnamese.
Beim ersten Stopp bin ich ziemlich verwundert, als ich zuerst ein Zebra und dann ein paar Cowboys sehe. Beim näheren Hinsehen erkenne ich, dass es nur ein angemaltes Pferd ist und die Cowboys biertrinkende Vietnamesen sind.
To the Datanla waterfall you’re supposed to walk down...or you just take the fun path: the summer toboggan run! Back up? You’re pulled up the mountain in that sled as well.
Zum Datanla Wasserfall muss man ein Stück absteigen...oder man nimmt den spaßigen Weg: die Sommerrodelbahn! Und retour? Da wird man samt Schlitten wieder hinaufgezogen.
Back in the city itself there’s some place called “Crazy House” and I have no idea what to expect. Explore it with me and be as baffled as I was:

I just realize I took few pictures because my fear of heights got me right there.
We walk, step, nearly climb and crawl up and down over rooftops and through buildings. Everything is bent or curled.
One thought is running circles in my mind: the way it is, this would never get a building permit in Austria, haha!
Standing in front of a room I finally realize: this is also a accommodation and you can have your own hobbit cave in there:
Wir gehen, steigen, nahezu klettern und kriechen rauf und runter, über Dächer und durch Gebäude. Alles ist gebogen oder verzwirbelt.
Eins kreist mir ständig im Kopf rum: so etwas würde in der Form in Österreich niemals eine Baugenehmigung bekommen, haha!
Als ich plötzlich vor einem Gästezimmer stehe, dämmert mir, dass das ganze Teil auch ein Gästehaus ist und man sich hier in seine ganz persönliche Hobbithöhle einbuchen kann:

Off to Hội An
After three days with only 10 to 25°C I’m more than ready for the sea again. Hoi An is only a 14 hour sleeper bus ride away. Damn.
Hoi An really is worth the ride. It’s a neat city and the old town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The mixture of asian and european style is hard to put into words.
The tidiness sure is what astonished me the most.
Nach drei Tagen mit nur 10 bis 25°C bin ich mehr als bereit für das Meer. Hoi An ist lediglich 14 Stunden Schlafbusfahrt entfernt. Verdammt.
Hoi An ist den Weg wirklich wert. Es ist eine gepflegte Stadt und die Altstadt ist Teil des UNESCO Weltkulturerbe. Die Mischung des asiatischen und europäischen ist schwer in Worte zu fassen.
Am meisten hat mich sicherlich die Sauberkeit fasziniert.
Today I left beautiful Hoi An to drive to Da Nang, situated 30 km to the north of Hoi An.
This city again differs from the previous one a lot. Vietnam never ceases to amaze me.
Heute ging es vom schönen Hoi An weitere 30 km in den Norden nach Da Nang.
Diese Stadt unterscheidet sich erneut stark von der vorherigen. Dieses Vietnam verwundert mich immer wieder.
The Inside Travels
The past few days weren’t the best I had so far. Most of the time I spent in bed sick with my mood declining day by day. Besides learning Spanish a bit, I couldn’t get myself to be productive too much.
With this day I actually feel quite alright again and I hope to be back on track by tomorrow. :)
Die letzten paar Tage waren nicht gerade die besten, die ich bisher hatte. Die meiste Zeit lag ich krank im Bett rum und meine Stimmung kletterte abwärts. Abgesehen vom Spanisch lernen konnte ich mich nur begrenzt zur Produktivität bewegen.
Mit dem heutigen Tag fühle ich mich allerdings schon einigermaßen besser und bin morgen hoffentlich wieder fit. :)
