The outdoor landscapes of my youth were the green fields of Ohio and the Appalachian mountain forests of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The desert landscapes of the American southwest are a world apart from that and yet I found myself instantly drawn to them. One of my road trips from Vegas took my to a part of Route 66 in Arizona.

Route 66 was once known as the Main Street of America. It was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. US 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s. Route 66 was eclipsed by the Interstate highway system but small parts of it still exist.
