Don't miss Bacalar!

Yes - this is it, the best kept secret of the Yucatan peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo.

I am telling you (hand full of awesome Stemians) who read this post about this location and I will keep pointing out some unpolished diamonds to you as our trip develops!

Only a few tourists were in Bacalar at the time we passed through and we got hooked, ending up staying for a week longer than anticipated! It is the perfect location for many reasons, not only because it is between two major tourist areas, Tulum (Mexico) and Caye Caulker (Belize).

Well, it is a great location to hang out and enjoy the lake. Just look at these colors - it is incredible this is a lake and not the Caribbean Sea. These are all unedited photos we took with our cameras.

Our AirBnB had canoes available - we went out most days

Sometimes we just chilled in the garden and swam off the deck

We were completely in love with the nature. Special in this area is also that it is surrounded and speckled with cenotes (deep holes in the ground caused by meteorites - often filled with ground water) which was quite a mystery and a reason for us to go exploring with our snorkels (The last image in this posts shows the cenotes in the area).

It is also the perfect location to go out on a sailing trip with one of the locals who offer their services at any dock close to the center - you can't miss it.

The village of Bacalar is small and there is little going on in town. You get your food from the market which is only open a few hours in the morning and a couple in the afternoon offering mainly local produce. There is not much more available, so if you have special wishes be prepared when you go.
