Palmanova - the most marvelous of Italian planned walled cities

Built in 1593 to commemorate the victory of the Republic of Venice over the Ottoman Turks in the Battle of Lepanto architecturally speaking it is one of the most innovative examples of fortified plan cities in the world. This genial utopian planned city built in the shape of a star with 9 points was the brainchild of Vincenzo Scamozzi and it underwent 2 subsequent construction phases during the late 17th century and during the Napoleonic era.
