Found the same thing when I toured through that area of the world - the farther east you went, the more like North America it became.
Can definitely relate to the bad blood too. Tried to say "thank you" when in Croatia, but said it the same way I was saying it in Slovenia, which is also the same way they say it in Serbia... the baker was not impressed!
