Big Whistler / tatra marmot / caught within rocks in polish mountains

Hello Steemians!

Meeting on the high mountains can be interesting, scary or just nice. that was mainly nice

This #animal in the past was a hunting animal, in the nineteenth century its numbers dropped drastically. He is a summer herbivore, lives in territorial family clans in the #mountains from the upper ridge to the top floor. It belongs to the most rare vertebrates in #Poland and under strict #protection.

The descriptions of the Tatra #marmots were very modest and rather related to #hunting. The Hungarian pastor Andreas Jonas Czirbesz wrote in 1774: "The Carpathian #marmot resides in the summer and winter in the pits of the highest #mountain peaks. It feeds on roots and herbs and has oily, tasty meat. Meat, skins, but above all, fat were valued, which was widely used in #folk #medicine"

Marmots were caught almost without restrictions until around 1868, and on the Hungarian side of the Tatras until 1883, when the regulations protecting this species were introduced.

In 1865, the first description of the marmot biology was made. The author of the "About the marmot" position was Maksymilian Nowicki - co-founder of the Tatra Society, researcher of Tatra flora and fauna and pioneer of nature conservation in Poland.

Nowicki, explaining the generic name Arctomys used for marmots, used the term "bear-mouse" while Ludwik Zejszner, who wrote the words "bear-mouse" at the same time: ... this peculiarly animal looks like it was composed of two others animals; similar to the mouse, the rest is of the bear's body, covered with a long hair that is no different from raccoons. The highlanders call him a Tatra marmot for his special barking, because the single barking voices are so attracted that they have a great resemblance to the whistles ... In the Tatra halls, the marmots make very long burrows, they mow with grass and, like many animals, take a winter long sleep. At the end of the summer, he abolishes his stocks of rootlets and grows out of the caverns, gets fatigued, gets extraordinary obesity, falls asleep in this winter residence, and only with spring wakes up completely skinny...

Hope you like this nice animal I caught... in beautiful shot!

Enjoy your day

Jack
