Romania Travel Tip: #3 Poenari Fortress

Dear Steemit friends,

Welcome to my blog, where I try to promote some of the most beautiful places, architectural sites and natural wonders of my homeland, Romania.

The main purpose is to make Romania your travel destination in the near future.
If I manage that, then my mission is complete

This is my #3 post of a Travel Tip series, and today I would like to show you the Poenari Fortress

The Poenari fortress was built by Negru Voda in the 14th century for defense and observation purposes. The fortress is surrounded by legends related to Prince Vlad the Impaler and is supposed to have been the place of his refuge during the Turks attacks.

The fortress has an elongated shape, with 5 defensive towers and extremely thick walls. Over time, its destruction was brought by a Turkish siege in 1462 and by an earthquake that crashed a northern wall in 1915. Due to its strategic position on the top of a cliff, it was also used as a prison or treasure house.

In order to reach the fortress, visitors have to climb 1480 steps. The stair was built by local authorities to simplify access. Hiking takes about 30 minutes, depending on the physical condition of each. The beech forest offers you a unique landscape that will make you forget the pain caused by climbing.

Once you get upstairs, you will be greeted by two impaled Ottoman corpses, but also by a guillotine and a gibbet. Beyond the horror landscape surrounding the fortress, you have a delightful view. Above you can admire the Vidraru Dam, the Arges and Transfagarasan road.

Unfortunately, even if it has attracted the attention of foreign audiences and renowned televisions such as National Geographic or Discovery, who have made numerous documentaries, the fortress is not restored, which spoil his beauty. If you have a free weekend, do not hesitate to point to this tourist destination too!
