TripFM #67: The New Fortress of Kerkyra, Corfu Island, Greece, 2014 (16 pics)

The New Fortress of Kerkyra is on the hill of St. Mark near the old city harbor and protects the city from the west side. The construction of the fortress began by the Venetians in the late 16th century, when it became clear that the Old Fortress is not enough for a full defense of the city.

The fortress consists of two massive bastions-twins and is a two-level fortification structure. The main function of the lower level was the protection of the city port, the upper level was intended for the defense of the city.

Nowadays, the New Fortress is a unique architectural monument majestically towering over Kerkyra.

Here are some photos from our walk around the New Fortress.

The inner territory of the bastions of the fortress.

(In my opinion, Kerkyra is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Greece.)

Thank you for travelling with me.
