As we have mentioned many times before, this coronavirus problem has long-reaching impacts not just on people but also on our four-legged friends in the streets who previously looked to markets, temples, or restaurants for some scraps to eat. All of these places have been closed for over a month and while it does look like they will be opened back up to a certain degree very soon, we still have our work cut out for us.
Thankfully, this is a task we gladly take on.
"Sparky" here is cute one. He recognizes our vehicles when we approach and he charges out, tail a flapping and high speed. He is one of the friendlier street dogs and hopefully his wonderful attitude spreads to some of the others.
Prior to the "shutdown" Lanta Animal Welfare already had an impressive stock of food stores, so they were much better equipped to handle the near complete lack of tourists who would normally contribute to he charity with both money and donations of food and also volunteering their time. As the number one recommended activity on the Island (from Trip Advisor), Lanta Animal Welfare is normally very busy with the arrival of generous donations from Animal Lovers from around the world.
Yeah, he should probably have that mask over his nose as well, we know
There is a bit more freedom to move around in Koh Lanta since it is an island and therefore doesn't have a constant threat of reintroduction of the virus. Therefore the technicians were still able to travel around and feed newborns and provide vaccinations for them. We have had a bit more trouble performing this task on the mainland, where the police are less than enthusiastic about people moving around, even if it is for charitable reasons.
Due to budgetary constraints, sterilizations have been put on hold as we focus our finances on the feeding and vaccinations, which we deemed more vital for the time being. It would be nice if we could focus on all matters and sterilization is certainly an important thing, but if we have to choose between that and food, the food options is the more economical one.
Lanta Animal Welfare is far more established as an organization and was our inspiration for starting Krabi Animal Welfare. We work together whenever possible and use their success as a "benchmark" of sorts for our own efforts. We hope to one day be able to mimic their model and extend it to the Krabi mainland as well.
All of these images are from their efforts, not ours. But since we are both pushing towards the same goal, they likely don't mind us celebrating their wins with them. You can see their website Here
