Mezcales at La Botica, Mexico City, a Tasteem review

Last Saturday we went to Mexico City Downtown to have some drinks with friends because were celebrating the birthday of one of them. We manage to choose one of the many bars in the area and walk to it.

A few years ago this area was a little dangerous by night, but now there’s a lot of people, a lot of police and the streets are well lit. So you can walk safely through the area and enjoy a nice night.

We choose a place called “La Botica” it is inside “The Downtown”, a nice boutique hotel really close to the Zocalo (the main plaza of the city). To get inside La Botica you need to enter the hotel, cross to the bottom of the restaurant, climb the stairs to the shopping area and search for the place in that floor. It is in one of the corners and you can spot it for the white tables with a big black B.

The place is small and sells a wide variety of artisan mezcal, beers and some other artisan beverages like Sotol or Posh. You can also have some cocktails with a mezcal base. You can’t have whiskey, rum, vodka or any other kind of alcoholic beverage in here, just artisan Mexican ones.

First I asked for one shot of soltol, this beverage has a lot more punch than tequila or mezcal. You won’t get a lot from this picture because it’s just a glass with some transparent liquid, but believe me it has a lot o punch.

Then I asked for a cocktail named “Morena”. It obviously had mezcal in it and tamarind, so it has really Mexican flavors in it.

Unlike tequila, mezcal is accompanied by slices of orange with a red worm salt. It’s like a red chili powder, a little spicy but enjoyable for non Mexican people.

Then everything else it’s a blur and I stopped taking pictures ☺. But we had a good time. As far as I know there are some other locations of this bar in the city, buth don’t know where.

Sorry fot the pictures, it was really dark and complicated to take but I hope you enjoyed the review and see you soon.
