In the years that we have been living in The Netherlands, we've foudn that there has been a great growth in decent qualtiy restaurants and cafes in the Den Haag area. There was a time when it was quite difficult to get a decent coffee... but these days, there are many more great cafes that make excellent coffee... and also some pretty decent cakes to go with them!

I often have time to try out these places... as one or other of the kids are going to be in various activities, and I have to kill time with the other kid. Which often (in the wetter and colder months) means that we are going to head indoors for coffee and cakes!

Haver is one little cafe that was recommended to me by one of my students recently... so, I made sure to drop by and try out the quality of the coffee!

The Space

Haver is one of the the many great cafes that has popped up in this area of Den Haag... it is a pretty trendy and well off area... not exactly the place where we live though! Still, we find ourselves in this area relatively frequently...

Haver does have some outdoor seating... but it is quite limited... more interesting is the indoor seating and decor. It is quite clean and there is a nice wood aesthetic to go along with the bio type of food fare. A nice amount of plants also round out the decor, which gives the entire indoor area a really nice relaxed and fresh feeling.

There is also a little (not so little...) area of the cafe set aside for a kids play area! Lots of books and wooden toys and space to sit down and draw or paint! It's a great place for families with kids... unfortuntely, that also means that the word is out, and the corner is often the most popular place in the cafe!

The Menu

The menu is pretty standard light snacks and lunch sort of fare. However, we are always here only for coffee and cake... so it is just as simple as asking for the coffee that you want (they also do babycinos too for the kids!)... asking for whatever cakes that they have on display!

The Food

So... to begin with! The main event... the cappucino here is perfect! It is creamy and not SCALDING HOT! There is nothing worse than burnt milk or coffee that melts your tongue...

Thankfully, they do a great job here... even for takeaways as well! The Babycinos that they do for the kids are also a big hit!

All coffee is served with a little slice of cake... it's good, but I really like the places that serve it with a small ice cream cone!

Okay... the main event for the kids are the cakes.... and the cakes here are pretty damn good! On this particular visit, we had a berry cheesecake and a carrot cake. Both of which were nice and moist, and with great taste. Not ultra sweet... so you aren't left feeling bloated and sickly.

The Experience

I love this place... I've been back more than a few times... alone without the kids when I need to kill time. It's a quiet and friendly place to just sit down with a laptop and get some stuff done.

I've visitied during times that haven't been too busy... I'm not sure how it is during the lunch rushes. There isn't a large amount of seating, so it is possible that it would be a bit more crowded than I would prefer... however, during the times that I normally visit, the place is only sparsely populated... and it is really the perfect place to sit and relax with a great cup of coffee and superb piece of cake (or two...)!
