Food chemistry Vol 8 : Are fruit sugars harmful for our body? The difference between natural and additional sugars!!

Hello friends, welcome at my 9th post of food chemistry. Today I will write about the nutritional differences between the sugar in the fruits and the sugar in the processed food. Μany people think that sugar contained in fruit is just as damaging to health as sugar which is contained in sweets. But what is the truth? Should we eat more fruits or they are dangerous to our health?

To answer this question, we must first understand the difference between natural and additional sugars. Natural sugars exist in fruits in the form of fructose and in milk in the form of galactose. Οn the other hand, the additional sugars are added to the foods during their processing and we usually find them in the form of classic table sugar, which is scientifically called sucrose and is usually composed of fructose and glucose. Ιn fact the chemical structure and composition of the above sugars is the same. Their only difference is the way our body metabolizes the specific sugars.

The sugars found in fruits are a piece of a complex nutrient grid which contains vitamins, trace elements and vegetable fiber. These nutrients help to slow the absorption of fructose from the body and thus we have better control of sugar in the blood. They also prolong the feeling of satiety and help to reduce the storage of fat. Αll the structural components of this nutrient grid are essential for the good health of our body!!

In the category of additional sugars, sucrose is not accompanied by a grid of valuable nutrients, so they are rapidly absorbed by the blood. Αs a result we stay hungry and the sugar in the blood goes to very high levels.

In conclusion, the sugar in the fruits can also be harmful to our body but it contains many nutritious ingredients that nourish and shield our body. So if the next time you eat a fruit and think it's harmful to health, due to the sugars it contains, think about how many other nutrients you'll get from it. If you want to quit sugar, stop eating foods which contains additional sugars(sucrose) because it contains no beneficial nutrients for our body.
