There are many social, family, cultural or psychological reasons that could lead a woman to decide to hide a pregnancy; a pregnancy involves many changes for woman and those around her. Pregnancy is reason of absenteeism and school dropout, many can not continue with their job or are fired after becoming pregnant, and many others, especially young mothers are forced to leave their studies because of it.
A pregnancy can cause rejection and destructive criticism by relatives or acquaintances, besides bearing a great responsibility since the pregnant woman must comply with a strict medical control and clinical examinations to rule out complications and modify many aspects of her lifestyle for the sake of the future baby; social pressure is severe in the future mother and much more when it comes to an unwanted pregnancy, non-planned or at a young age.
Due to all this, many women decide to hide their pregnancy during the first months or even during its entire course, without considering that this practice puts at risk the health of both the mother and the fetus.
I decided to write about this topic because recently an university study partner became pregnant; for security reasons pregnant students are not allowed to attend or carry out certain subjects, so my companion decided to hide her pregnancy by wearing tight clothes and using a girdle, without taking into account all the risks that this implies.
I realized the seriousness of the matter when I enter the internet and saw that there were a lot of web pages in which instead of warning about the physical and psychological consequences of this practice it explained in detail how to hide a pregnancy. From this we realize how a pregnancy can affect the life of a woman and the concern that can be felt by '' the sweet waiting ''.
Although there are pregnancy belly bands also called belt belly band or ssupport belt for pregnant women which support and alleviate the musculoskeletal discomfort that arise in pregnancy, the use of these should be supervised by the treating obstetrician-gynecologist; These belts are not harmful when used correctly.
There are women who resist to the changes that their bodies suffer during pregnancy and for vanity also resort to the use of girdles to "keep their figures."
The abdominal pressure exerted by these girdles, as mentioned above, compromises not only fetal health but also maternal, although many women have hidden their pregnancies in this way and both have resulted unharmed, this practice involves many risks, possible complications and irreversible alterations in the fetus, which are much more difficult to cope with than pregnancy itself.
This practice can cause:
Alterations in fetal growth by not having enough space to develop, causing bone and muscle malformations or even vital organs may be compromised.
There is a greater risk of Placental abruption, which is a situation of urgency.
There is a greater risk of premature rupture of the membranes, which causes that the amniotic fluid escape, what puts the fetus's life at risk
There is a greater risk of uterine rupture, which is a very serious complication, being one of the causes of maternal mortality.
There is a risk of abortion and the complications of it put the woman's life at risk.
These girdles when pressing the abdominal muscles cause them to lose their strength and muscle tone, which is important for labor and can make it difficult.
Girdles when exerting pressure hinder the correct blood circulation, which can cause gastrointestinal, respiratory and cutaneous alterations and swelling, among others.
Whatever the cause that can lead a woman to hide her pregnancy we should take into account the consequences and risks to health.
If we know any woman who is carrying out this practice, we should explain and advise her in the best possible way, to avoid unfortunate situations that could harm her for life.
