I've been watching the Steemit Alexa rank fall over the last couple of months after peaking in the top 1000. It's not a total collapse. More of a slow decline. I find Hypestat gives a lot more detail that you might have to pay for on the Alexa site. That includes a country breakdown.
What's interesting is that the ranks are improving for the top few countries. The top five account for half of viewers and views. Steemit is still doing really well in Korea although it peaked around 200. India and China are ramping up with massive potential. As Steemit does not rely on advertising, unlike most sites, it doesn't matter where the users come from really. Advertisers pay a lot less for viewers from poorer countries. Hypestat also has a breakdown of what each country can earn a site and the value per viewer varies massively.
Nigeria and Venezuela are also doing really well thanks to active communities. Bangladesh is also booming. It may only take a few really active recruiters to build a local community and they can post local content for that audience rather than trying to compete on English language posts. That may not be where the big money is now, but there's great potential for the future.
I found more references to Steemit this week on The Next Web and My Broadband. Nothing too in-depth, but they may get more people interested. It may still take a while for new accounts to become active. We're waiting on news of that improving. We never hear too much about how they are checking, but then they don't want to give too much away.
I heard a while back that there seemed to be batches of possible spam accounts being created, but I don't know if that is still going on. We need genuine users and to keep them active. We have to keep on encouraging the minnows. Invest your votes in them rather than chasing the elusive favours of whales.
