Russian schoolchildren discovered the island in the Arctic

The Hydrographic Service of the Navy of the Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged the Vilkitsky South Island in the Arctic, open to schoolchildren from the Moscow region. Documents on the registration of a new geographical object were sent to the Russian Geographical Society. The size of the island is 410 by 780 meters.

Discoverers from the Moscow region school in Khimki, the Defense Ministry will take in the summer expedition to the island planned for the summer. His 14-year-old Artem Makarenko and 15-year-old Valeria Saenko found during a year watching the changes in glaciers in the Arctic from images from several satellites - on January 31 they reported on a new facility at the All-Russian Youth Readings named after Korolev in Samara.

Schoolchildren conducted a study within the framework of a youth interregional project group, operating under the leadership of Riskat with the support of the Roskosmos corporation. The pictures they studied were made by the Russian satellite "Canopus-B", as well as European Landsat-7/8 and Sentinel-½.
