Questioning My Leadership Ability: What Others See in Me that I Don't...

Most of the time, I always run from positions and responsibilities, not because I am not a responsible person, but because I don't always like the stress that comes with being a leader, having to take responsibility for the actions of others even though they were not directly your fault. This is one of the major reasons why I always run from a leadership position.

But somehow, without even chasing a position, it is more like the position runs after me when I don't even look for it. I just naturally get elected or chosen to lead any group I find myself in when, in fact, I try so hard to put myself in tiny corners so that I wouldn't be seen.

It is almost the same way as how I try so hard not to get known in any space I find myself, but somehow, the opposite happens. I get even more popular when I try not to be.

What prompted this article was when my friend Olujay randomly mentioned to me that I have very good leadership qualities, and I was like "do you mean me"? I didn't really get what he said he saw, but it made me still have to reach out to another friend of mine to ask him the same question if he saw any leadership qualities in me.

Then I got an interesting reply, and he told me: "Some things in life are just like us trying to look at our nose. We can't see it until we sit down carefully to look at it, but others can see it without any trouble. There are things about yourself that you won't be able to see perhaps because it comes naturally to you, but to others, it is very glaring."

He agreed that I did have some leadership qualities and advised me to sit and examine myself. Looking at myself, I believe I may possess some leadership skills because, in a way, I have led some projects and have been able to work with people easily, properly make plans, and work towards them.

Also, I always give people the opportunity to say their thoughts before I say mine. I don't always impose my decision on others, but I try to let others see why I chose to make a certain decision. Neither do I close my ears to accept people's decisions. I try to see people's opinions and thoughts from their point of view because one thing I have learned in life is that a situation can be seen from different angles, and the perspective I may be seeing might not always be the best. So my mind is always open to suggestions.

Hmm. Maybe I should stop running from responsibilities when the more I run, the more they find me, or I should accept the fact that I may be a naturally-born leader.
