Hello everyone.

In today's post, we will visit another architecture of the late medieval period from Delhi, the Tomb of Sikandar Lodi.

Sikandar Lodhi was the second ruler of the Lodhi Dynasty that ruled over Delhi from 1489-1517 AD [source]. He was one of the most successful rulers of the Lodi Dynasty. And no surprise that he controlled immense wealth. When he died in 1517, his son built the Tomb for him.

How to reach

Sikandar Lodi's Tomb is situated in Lodi Gardens in Delhi, India. Being in the capital city of India, it is very well connected to the outside world.

You can take the flight and land at IGI Airport, Delhi and then take a private cab/taxi to Lodhi Garden.

Alternatively, you can use the Delhi metro services, the nearest metro station is Jor Bagh. With only a 10 min walk you can reach the Lodi Gardens and see this tomb.

Architecture and Design

As I mentioned earlier it was constructed in 1571-18. Like every other Tomb from the same period, this also used red sandstones. And is a typical example of Indo-Islamic Architecture and the tomb is octagonal in size. The tomb itself is squared off by boundary walls on all sides with a beautiful garden inside and the Tomb situated in the middle.

I wonder why they need to fortify a tomb like this. Tomb robbing? LOL

The southern gate is the only gate through which the visitors are allowed to enter and exit.

The eastern gate served as an important gate, it faced a small pond.

The Tomb itself is encompassed by a beautiful garden. Seems like they never forget to add a garden when constructing any monument of some significance.

Two small chatris were built just outside the southern wall of the fortified complex. They may have served as watchtowers or simply as a decoration..? These ruined *chattris had blue tile works. You can almost see the blue specs of the remains of that tiles.

The inside of the Tomb was barred from visitors. So, I couldn't get you those shots. It was dark anyways with of course the tomb of Sikandar Lodi placed inside.

Check out some of the other tombs discussed in my previous posts.

  1. Humayun's Tomb

  2. Safdarjang's Tomb
