alternatetext

The Woman in Black is a 2012 British supernatural horror film directed by James Watkins and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey, and Liz White. The film is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Susan Hill.

The film follows Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), a young lawyer who is sent to the remote village of Eel Marsh to settle the affairs of the recently deceased Alice Drablow. Upon his arrival, Kipps is met with hostility from the villagers, who are clearly hiding something. He soon discovers that the village is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman who died in childbirth. The woman, known as the Woman in Black, is said to target children, and Kipps soon finds himself drawn into a terrifying battle for survival.

As Kipps investigates the Woman in Black, he learns of her tragic backstory. The woman, Jennet Humfrye, was a young woman who was seduced and abandoned by a local man. After giving birth to his child, Jennet was driven to madness and drowned herself in the nearby marsh. Her ghost has been haunting the village ever since, seeking revenge on those who wronged her.

Kipps soon realizes that the only way to stop the Woman in Black is to confront her past and help her find peace. He travels to the marsh where Jennet died and confronts her ghost. After a terrifying encounter, Kipps is able to help Jennet find the peace she has been seeking for so long. The Woman in Black is finally laid to rest, and the village is freed from her curse.

The Woman in Black is a chilling and atmospheric film that is sure to stay with you long after the credits have rolled. The film's success led to a sequel, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, which was released in 2014.
