alternatetext

Mortal Thoughts (1991) is a neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Alan Rudolph and starring Demi Moore, Glenne Headly, Bruce Willis, John Pankow, and Harvey Keitel. Told in narrative flashbacks set in a police interrogation, the film centers on a woman implicated in the violent murder of her friend's abusive, drug-addicted husband.

Cynthia Kellogg (Demi Moore) is being interrogated by two detectives, John Woods (Harvey Keitel) and Linda Nealon (Billie Neal), about the death of her friend Joyce's husband, James Urbanski (Bruce Willis). James was a hateful and abusive man, and he had made threats against Cynthia on multiple occasions.

As Cynthia tells her story to the detectives, the film flashes back to events leading up to James's death. We see Cynthia and Joyce's close friendship, as well as James's increasingly violent and unpredictable behavior. We also see Cynthia's own marriage to the kind and supportive Artie (John Pankow).

On the night of James's death, Cynthia, Joyce, Artie, and a group of other friends go out to celebrate. James drinks heavily and becomes increasingly belligerent. He eventually gets into a fight with Artie, and Cynthia and Joyce try to pull him away. In the scuffle, James falls and cuts his throat.

Cynthia and Joyce try to help James, but he bleeds to death. The police are called, and Cynthia is brought in for questioning. She is initially suspected of murder, but the detectives eventually determine that James's death was an accident.

However, the detectives continue to suspect that Cynthia may have known more about James's death than she is letting on. They also believe that she may have had a motive to kill him.

Mortal Thoughts is a complex and suspenseful film that explores the themes of domestic violence, friendship, and betrayal. It is also a meditation on the nature of guilt and innocence.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was praised for its performances, direction, and atmosphere. It is considered by some to be a cult classic.
