The 2016 film Genius is a biographical drama about the relationship between renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (Colin Firth) and author Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law). The film is based on A. Scott Berg's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius.
The film begins in 1929, when Perkins receives a massive manuscript from Wolfe. Perkins is immediately struck by Wolfe's talent and agrees to publish his novel, Look Homeward, Angel. The novel becomes a critical and commercial success, and Perkins and Wolfe develop a close friendship.
However, the relationship between the two men is also strained by their different personalities. Perkins is a reserved and meticulous editor, while Wolfe is a passionate and impulsive writer. Perkins often has to cut Wolfe's manuscripts down to size, which frustrates Wolfe. Despite their differences, Perkins and Wolfe continue to work together on Wolfe's subsequent novels, including Of time and the River and You Can't Go Home Again.
Genius is a fascinating look at the creative process and the relationship between an editor and an author. The film also explores the themes of friendship, ambition, and the nature of genius.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the performances of Firth and Law, while others criticizing the film's slow pace and lack of focus. However, Genius is still a worthwhile film for fans of literary history and biographical dramas.
