I was passing by this square one day and when I saw the movement of people in the center I stopped and approached. There were a group of adults and children dressed up, they were going to perform a presentation of two typical Venezuelan folkloric traditions, of course I stayed there along with other people who had also stopped to watch. In these photos you can see the Dance of Las Burriquitas (donkeys) and the Dance of El Sebucán. The Dance of Las Burriquitas is one of the most popular in Venezuela, it was declared a National Cultural Heritage in 2016 and dates back to colonial times, when it was adopted by indigenous people and slaves. It is believed to have to do with the "Dance of the heifers and horsemen" that existed in Spain in the Middle Ages. Almost all participants are men dressed as women, with colorful skirts, hats and long braids that simulate being mounted on donkeys made of cloth, wood or other materials. This dance accompanied by music such as Venezuelan merengue and other traditional sounds, is super fun, it is a kind of pantomime in which the dancers imitate the movements and sounds of these animals, do pirouettes and also approach the public, especially children to generate reactions. Every September 30 is the National Day of the Burriquitas, in many states of the country there are cultural collectives that keep this manifestation alive and carry out meetings and presentations in towns and cities. On the other hand, the Dance of El Sebucán is another manifestation that is performed throughout the country and also in other South American countries, it is said that it arrived after the Spanish colonization and that it has its origins in a European pagan practice that worshipped trees during springtime. In Venezuela this dance is associated with the weaving of the sebucán, a utensil used by the indigenous people to filter the cyanide from the bitter yucca to make the casabe, a dry tortilla that accompanies meals. The dance seems simple but each participant must perfectly choreograph the dance around the pole where the colored ribbons are fixed or they will not be able to weave or unweave the weft correctly and everything could become a tangled mess. The music that accompanies this performance is very cheerful and its notes come from instruments such as the guitar, the cuatro, the bandolin and the maracas. What did you think? *Siempre es divertido e interesante presenciar alguna tradición folklórica y si esto sucede sin que lo esperes, aún más. Estaba pasando por esta plaza un día y al ver movimiento de gente en su centro me detuve y me acerqué. Allí estaban un grupo de adultos y de niños vestidos llamativamente, iban a realizar una presentación de dos tradiciones folklóricas típicas venezolanas, por supuesto me quedé allí junto a otras personas que también se habían detenido a ver. En estas fotos pueden ver el Baile de las Burriquitas y el Baile de El Sebucán.* *El Baile de las Burriquitas es uno de los más populares en Venezuela, fue declarado como Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación en 2016 y data de la época de la colonia, cuando fue adoptado por los indígenas y los esclavos. Se cree que tiene que ver con el “Baile de las vaquillas y los caballines” que existía en España en la Edad Media. Casi todos los participantes son hombres vestidos de mujer, con coloridas faldas, sombrero y largas trenzas que simulan estar montados sobre unas burras hechas de tela, madera u otros materiales.* *Este baile acompañado de música como el merengue venezolano y otros tradicionales, es súper divertido, es una especie de pantomima en la que los bailarines imitan los movimientos y sonidos de estos animales, hacen piruetas y además se acercan al público, especialmente a los niños para generar reacciones. Cada 30 de septiembre es el Día Nacional de las Burriquitas, en muchos estados del país hay colectivos culturales que mantienen viva esta manifestación y realizan encuentros y presentaciones en pueblos y ciudades.* *Por otra parte, el Baile de El Sebucán es otra manifestación que se realiza en todo el país y también en otros países suramericanos, dicen que llegó tras la colonización española y que tiene sus orígenes en una práctica pagana europea que le rendía culto a los árboles durante la primavera. En Venezuela esta danza está asociada al tejido del sebucán, un utensilio que usan los indígenas para filtrar el cianuro de la yuca amarga y poder fabricar el casabe, una tortilla seca que acompaña las comidas.* *El baile parece sencillo pero cada participante debe hacer perfectamente la coreografía alrededor del palo donde están fijadas las cintas de colores que sostienen o no podrán tejer ni destejer correctamente la trama y todo podría convertirse en un enredo. La música que acompaña esta ejecución es muy alegre y sus notas provienen de instrumentos como la guitarra, el cuatro, el bandolín y las maracas.* *¿Qué les parecieron? ¡Espero hayan disfrutado esta pequeña muestra cultural!*
