When my friend and I were in the province of Chubut in April of this year, we didn't even imagine that we were going to be there for the second time in the middle of the high season. I guess things happened the way they did because they had to, and here we were, after a long 17 hour drive with her and her family. The main attraction of this area between the months of June and December is the reproduction of whales, for which year after year, thousands of tourists like us come to the coast of this province to enjoy these marine giants 🐳.
Cuando mi amiga y yo estuvimos en la provincia de Chubut en Abril de este año ni nos imaginabamos que ibamos a estar por segunda vez allí en plena temporada alta. Supongo que las cosas se dieron como se dieron porque así debían ser, y ahí estabamos, después de un largo viaje de 17 horas en auto con ella y su familia. El principal atractivo de esta zona entre los meses de junio y diciembre es la reproducción de las ballenas, por la que año tras año, miles de turistas como nosotros llegan a las costas de esta provincia a disfrutar de estos gigantes marinos 🐳.
To stay, we chose the city of Puerto Madryn, which is the most inhabited in that area and with the greatest number of services, but according to the recommendations of those who live there, the best area to see whales from the coast was El Doradillo Beach, a about 12 km from the center. The good thing is that this time we had a vehicle and we could go further than the previous time. The road that took us there was mainly gravel but in good condition: a mix between conserving nature and promoting tourism 😅.
Para alojarnos elegimos la ciuidad de Puerto Madryn que es la más habitada en esa área y con la mayor cantidad de servicios, pero según las recomendaciones de los que viven allí, la mejor zona para ver ballenas desde la costa era la Playa el Doradillo, a unos 12 km del centro. Lo bueno es que esta vez teníamos un vehículo y podíamos ir más lejos que la vez anterior. El camino que nos llevó hasta allí era principalmente de ripio pero en buen estado: una mezcla entre conservar la naturaleza pero fomentar el turismo 😅.
Unlike the coasts of Buenos Aires, the Chubut coasts in this area are characterized by being made of small stones and not sand. In addition, this entire province is very windy, so even though it is hot, it is always necessary to have a coat on hand so that the wind does not end your patience. Regarding the sea, it looked an incredible blue, no matter how little sun there was when we arrived 😅.
A diferencia de las costas de Buenos Aires, las costas de Chubut en esta zona se caracterizan por ser de pequeñas piedras y no de arena. Además, toda esta provincia es muy ventosa, por lo que a pesar de que haga calor, siempre es necesario tener un abrigo a mano para que el viento no acabe con tu paciencia. Con respecto al mar, este se veía de un azul increíble, sin importar el poco sol que había cuando llegamos 😅.
El Doradillo beach has several drops where you can get close to the coast. In the first you can find an information center with a park ranger where they can guide you about the place. But there is no other service than this, neither bathrooms nor groceries, so I suppose that the idea is that the stay here is not so long. That seemed a bit strange to me considering that we were quite far from the city 😶.
La playa de El doradillo tiene varias bajadas en donde podes acercarte hasta la costa. En la primera se puede encontrar un centro de informes con un guardaparque en donde pueden orientarte sobre el lugar. Pero no hay ningún otro servicio más que este, ni baños ni proveedurías, por lo que supongo que la idea es que la estadía aquí no sea tan larga. Eso me pareció un poco raro considerando que estábamos bastante lejos de la ciudad 😶.
Although there are various species of animals throughout this area, the main attraction is the whales and everyone comes hoping to see them. The Southern Right Whale arrives in this part of Argentina at this time of the year (June to December) to reproduce and feed their young, so it is common for mothers to walk with their babies. Saying baby might sound small, but these animals at birth weigh more than 2000 kg 🤓.
Si bien en toda esta área hay varias especies de animales, el principal atractivo son las ballenas y todo el mundo viene con la esperanza de realizar algún avistaje. La Ballena Franca Austral llega a esta parte de Argentina en este momento del año (junio a diciembre) a reproducirse y alimentar a sus crías, por lo que es común que las madres anden con sus bebés. Decir bebé podría sonar a pequeño, pero estos animales al nacer pesan más de 2000 kg 🤓.
The rest of the year, the whales continue their journey back to the south, where they feed to gain size and then repeat the reproduction cycle. They make these trips in search of warm waters in the winter and cold waters in the summer. Apparently, it seems to them that the waters of our coasts are warm, but when I put my feet in to check it out, I did not think so 😅.
El resto del año, las ballenas continuan su recorrido volviendo hacia el sur, en donde se encargan de la alimentación para ganar tamaño y luego repiten el ciclo de reproducción. Ellas hacen estos viajes en busca de aguas cálidas en el invierno y aguas frías en el verano. Aparentemente, a ellas les parece que las aguas de nuestras costas son cálidas, pero cuando yo metí los pies para chequearlo no opiné lo mismo 😅.

If you want to see these animals from the coast, you need to go at high tide, because with their almost 14 meters long and 40 tons, it is impossible for them to get close at any other time. Fortunately we had a good day to watch from the coast, because we could see a few, some far away and others closer, but it was impossible not to distinguish them in the blue of the sea ❤️.
Si se desea ver a estos animales desde las costas en necesario ir a la hora de marea alta, porque con sus casi 14 metros de largo y 40 toneladas es imposible que se acerquen en otro momento. Afortunadamente nos tocó un buen día para el avistaje desde la costa, porque pudimos ver unas cuantas, algunas lejos y otras más cerca, pero era imposible no distinguirlas en lo azul del mar ❤️.
Seeing these huge animals made me feel as insignificant as when I see an imposing and beautiful landscape. It was impossible not to be moved by such a creation of nature. In one of the posters that I read, it said that these animals "are as gigantic as they are fragile", so it is our duty to protect them from hunting and from the pollution that humans throw into the ocean. It was really very emotional all the work to raise awareness that they do here to preserve in peace these animals that visit us year after year ❤️.
Ver a estos animales tan enormes me hizo sentir insignificante como cuando veo un paisaje imponente y hermoso. Era imposible no conmoverse con tal creación de la naturaleza. En uno de los carteles que leí decía que estos animales "son tan gigantes como frágiles", por lo que es nuestro deber protegerlos de la caza y de la propia contaminación que los humanos lanzamos hacia el océano. Realmente era muy emotivo todo el trabajo de conscientización que hacen aquí para preservar en paz a estos animales que año tras año nos visitan ❤️.
That day was one of the coolest days I had this year, we got tired of seeing whales passing here and there. Unfortunately I don't have a super professional camera that could have captured them from further away, but I am satisfied with what my eyes have seen. The ones that definitely did not have a good time were my ears, which after a while of enduring so much wind and wind were already asking for help 😅.
Ese día fue uno de los días más geniales que tuve este año, nos cansamos de ver ballenas pasando de aquí y allá. Lamentablemente no tengo una super cámara profesional que hubiese podido captarlas más de lejos, pero estoy conforme con lo que han visto mis ojos. Los que definitivamente no la pasaron bien fueron mis oídos, los cuales después de un rato de soportar tanto viento y viento ya pedía auxilio 😅.
I strongly recommend the walk to Playa El Doradillo because it is a unique experience of contact with the whales. Although there is no public transport that will take you there, it is possible to hire a tour at a travel agency or rent a bicycle to pedal there. Be that as it may, if you have the opportunity to get there, don't miss it because the trip is worth it ❤️.
Recomiendo fuertemente el paseo hasta la Playa El Doradillo porque es una experiencia única de contacto con las ballenas. A pesar de que no hay transporte público que te lleve hasta allí, es posible contratar una excursión en alguna agencia de viaje o alquilar una bicicleta para ir pedaleando hasta allí. Sea como sea, si tienen la oportunidad de llegar, no se lo pierdan porque el viaje vale la pena ❤️.
