I continue to be thankful for the help we get from temple monks

We currently work at 10 temples in the Krabi region in our attempts to improve the quality of life for the stray dog population that flocks to these areas. As I have mentioned before it is a custom of sorts for unwanted dogs and cats to be dropped off at temples, usually far away from the animal owner's house so that the animal will not attempt to return. It is a very tragic situation but one that is very common in this country. We are not a huge operation so we are just delighted that the monks who live and work at the temples have been very receptive to teaming up with us to help us get this job done.

The monks don't have a lot of resources but many of them seem to genuinely care a great deal about the animals that they share a living space with. Since we can't possibly monitor all the temples on a daily basis their input and familiarity with the animals is absolutely instrumental in our work. For one thing, it can prove quite difficult or even dangerous to attempt to get a dog or cat that does not know you into a crate for transporting them to the veterinarian for life-saving treatment.

The animals are far more receptive to being handled by the monks that they see every day and they are able to easily get them into the crates. You can see in this picture that the mother is not very pleased about her pup being put into a crate but in this particular situation a resident monk distracted her with treats while we loaded her into the truck. We brought the dog back the following day so everything was great in the end.

Although the monks are supposed to refuse the use of technology for the most part (as I understand it) they do have mobile phones and if there is a problem at the temples they will call us to help them out. These situations are not something that we would possibly ever even know about and it helps us to get the job done much faster and safer. We also provide them with food and they feed the animals on a daily basis. This alone saves us a huge amount of time.

We do not pay them for this and they do not expect to be compensated. It's a good thing because we don't have any money! We are always thankful for their help and this teaming up has resulted in much faster results than we ever had hoped for. Teamwork is the answer!
