Few things have changed, especially in those dark and self-interested governmental spheres, whose administrative silence is sometimes as frightening as the feeling that remains after seeing the famous painting by Munch entitled ‘The Scream’ and Teruel continues to be one of those curious regions of Spain, whose inhabitants continue to be hurt and cling to the compassionate thought that they do not exist.
But the truth is that Teruel exists and in its existence, it offers fragments of an ancient history, the passionate dramas of whose epic have attracted the attention of novelists and historians, who pursue in it the traces, not without admirable interest, of those dark episodes, which, back in the Middle Ages, were the protagonists of two estates that were viciously attacked by the de facto powers of the time: the Cathars and the Templars.
But in addition to the interest that the traveller may have in trying to follow this mysterious and pleasant trail, another of the countless attractions of Teruel is that it also offers the possibility of visiting a large number of picturesque villages, which, like Valderrobres, are happily located in the heart of one of the last strongholds of the so-called 'Magical Spain', as is, without a doubt, that magnificent region that responds to the striking name of Maestrazgo.
Pocas cosas han cambiado, sobre todo en esos oscuros e interesados ámbitos gubernamentales, cuyo silencio administrativo en ocasiones suele ser tan espantoso como la sensación que le queda a uno después de ver el famoso cuadro de Munch titulado ‘El grito’ y Teruel continúa siendo una de esas curiosas regiones de España, cuyos habitantes continúan dolidos y aferrados al pensamiento conmiserativo de que no existen.
Pero lo cierto es que Teruel existe y en su existencia, ofrece retazos de una historia antigua, los dramas pasionales de cuya épica han atraído la atención de novelistas e historiadores, que persiguen en ella los rastros, no exentos de admirable interés, de esos oscuros episodios, que, allá por la Edad Media, protagonizaron dos estamentos que fueron atacados con saña por los poderes fácticos de la época: los cátaros y los templarios.
Pero además del interés que puede suponer para el viajero intentar seguir ese misterioso y ameno rastro, otro de los innumerables atractivos de Teruel, es que ofrece, también, la posibilidad de conocer un gran número de pueblos pintorescos, que, como éste de Valderrobres, quedan felizmente situados en el corazón de uno de los últimos reductos de la denominada ‘España Mágica’, como es, sin duda alguna, esa magnífica región que responde al llamativo nombre del Maestrazgo.
