Let's travel together #130 - Cheile Jiețului (Jieț Gorges)

If you ever thought about how awesome it would be to discover Iceland but didn't save enough for it, here is a cheaper alternative to a country with huge tourism potential and a world of ice.

Jieț Gorges suggest a less known place even if it's located on a valley that is yet very popular both in Romania but abroad too, Jiu Valley.
The gorges are a protected area from the Hunedoara County but definitely a place to remember after you make your way to it even for the first time, especially if it's during the winter when I discovered it by myself as well.
The surface of 10 ha filled with lots of spectacular stone walls and many waterfalls that are creating a real-world of ice during the cold seasons are composing the Jieț Gorges Natural Reservation from Romania, which was also declared a true area of national interest.
Jieț Gorges is located in Petrila - a city very popular for being blessed with lots of natural beauties where you can meet the steepy mountainsides of Parâng Massif whom are the ones responsible for the birth of a natural wonder.

The gorges are pretty narrow and their length is not a big one, measuring just 11km which is enough to make every tourist fall in love with the gorgeous landscapes.
Being a place that is not very known by people is not really a bad thing, because we all know what humans are able to turn into such a beautiful place, but the period when Jieț Gorges are a little bit more popular is during the summer when they are being assaulted by lots of alpinists who are training on the high stone walls and explore some of the various undiscovered caves.

The noisy and clear water is your first buddy in this journey because it's going to accompany you along the relaxing walk into the wilderness.
The river comes from the many waterfalls which are formed in this area after heavy rains and snow melting, the most popular one being located at the beginning of the gorges and named Muncelul Waterfall - a impressive water dropping from a height of 30m.
The gorges have two popular points on their length of 11km, one of them being at km 4 and the other one at km 9,3 where you will also discover one of the four chalets, but the place known as To The Hooks as well - the narrowest part of the trail that will create illusions such as seeing the stone walls blocking the path or even falling over you.

In reality, the place is very safe, the gorges being visited by a few alpinists during winter too, creating a great show while climbing the frozen waterfalls that are creating the world of ice.
There is a total of four chalets that can be discovered in the journey: Cheile Jiet Chalet, Mija Chalet, Groapa Seaca Chalet, Obarsia Lotrului Chalet.

If you are an adrenaline lover, find out that Jieț Gorges are the perfect location for rafting, mountain biking, enduro, skiing, alpinism, and the place itself makes the connection to other points of interest form this county, such as Jieț Monastery and Vidra Lake, but also to the famous mountain road - Transalpina.

Since most of the stones are taking advantage of tiny rivers that are falling over them, most of the stones are embraced by lots of spectacular icy formations.
The phenomenon is not a rare one but when you get to see 5m long (or even more) icicles, you will be left speechless for sure.
Not to mention how powerful and delicate nature can be in this part of the world which is the key to relax and happiness in the Southern Carpathians.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this travel journal, Jieț Gorges are located in the city called Petrila which is crossed by DN7A Petrosani - Voineasca which makes the connection between two important counties, Hunedoara and Valcea.
The gorges make the connection between Petrosani and Transalpina and they can be reached by either foot or car because the route can be crossed by vehicles as well.
