There are numerous ways women are maltreated today in the society and it's believed that a woman is of less value then the man. Therefore whatever she wants to say or do has to be with a sole permission of her husband. Masculinity is the order of the day in my locality where by the man is seen as the super power and have the final say concerning any matter.
In an institution even though the woman have more to say concerning a matter no one tends to hear what she has to say. This particular issue have driven some women into life of timidity and always make her think less of herself. Some women who tends to break this siege are looked upon and at times termed as rabels even when they are paddling on the right direction. They don't get this form of treatment from the male folk but also from their fellow gender who have been clouded with this kind of few and who is not even ready to make positive impact.
Some of the ways women are been maltreated includes;
- Being a house wife. She is just a house wife is a commonly African mentality that has ravaged so many communities and homes today. The African setting says that the duty of a woman is mainly to her household which is the kitchen. They don't just believe that a woman could bring transformation to her community and beyond. Most times she gets locked up and gets to die with much potential embedded in her. From the beginning a woman is not meant to be less than a man but the fallen state of man made it look as if is the thing that is good to be oppressed.
- A woman is not qualify to inherit or access her husband's inheritance. This is an unfair treatment done today. This is so biting because many of the women go ahead to struggle alone with her children while the siblings of the husband have full control over her husband's properties. Most times she is driven out of the house with nothing left to take care of her kids. It's quite disheartening and not worthy to be heard at such kind of treatment. This tradition is unacceptable.
- Women don't have right to decide over her daughter's bride price. In most part of Africa especially in my tribe which I am so acquainted with women don't have the right whatsoever to decide what happens when the daughter is given out in marriage. Everything is said to be men's affairs. This kind of relegation has brought lots of pains to most women today.
- One of the unfair treatment that exists today is in the area of education. It's commonly believed in this part of life that women education ends in kitchen. Hmmm this has really made lots of men to smear Thier hearts from any positive about women.
CONCLUSION
It would interest you to know that these traditions and believe system developed around women does lot of harm than good. It's time to venture into reality. Let's allow women to breathe.
