The cross line: Parents, children and career

I believe every good parent wants the best for their children, hence they believe their choices are the best career wise. This subject is one that has been discussed over decades and is still very much talked about till date over and over again as we tend to see parents of different calibers making choices for their wards with or without their choice.

Like I have earlier said, I believe this parents want what's best for their kids hence the choice of career but what they fail to understand is that no matter what, every child has the right to decide his or her career part no matter what their choices may be. I see and hear a lot of parents forcing their children to study professional courses such as medicine and surgery, law, Accountancy and the likes just because they feel it is the only reasonable course to study and most importantly the way society has painted these courses.

I have also come to realize that most African parents are found of this because they desire the title not minding if their children has passion for the choices they picked for them. I sometimes hear some African parents say they must be address as mummy doctor, mummy lawyer and so many other titles. It's indeed sad because not only parents who are not sound educationally are in the game but both parents that are literates are found of this habits especially when they are successful in business. They want their child to also do business not minding if their interest is in the fashion industry. I mean there is nothing wrong with being a medical doctor or lawyer or a business man neither is there anything wrong in being a fashion designer, an actors/ movie producer and so many other careers yet they choose to be ruled by negligence.

Few years back, my aunt told me a story of her best friend son who was sponsored outside the country by his dad to study medicine even when this child clearly state he has no interest in becoming a medical doctor rather his dad threatened to withdraw seeing him through school. After traveling out, his first year as a medical student was so rough that he had to do a change of course without the knowledge of his parent. Finally he ended up studying food and nutrition pursuing his dreams to be a chef. From the story I was told it wasn't easy for the boy after his parent found out he later changed but he kept striving. He later became a top chef but it took a while before his parent accepted him back home seeing that he disappointed them. good to know they settled their differences and became United again.

So in all essence, it is necessary that parents should not choose a career part for their children rather they should respect their choices and give them all the support and love they need to be successful in the part they have chosen.
