Someone Comes Knocking

People talking some laughing others walking even jogging
Cars honking pigeons flocking cell phones ringing lovers kissing
Every breath you take fills your lungs with air that feels warm and gentle
Yet painfully aware it doesn't compare and something is still missing

Kicking at imaginary stones and small pebbles along the crosswalk
Seems to do little to ease the pain or any nagging thoughts
There is no one to listen no one to share nor anyone who cares
Your only friend a bar down the street with a long line of straight shots

A childhood filled with painful memories there were just too many
Hard to connect with most people who had normal loving families
Try to tell yourself be grateful as a tear runs down your cheek
Looking down at your drink thinking make the pain disappear please

Another morning another day can't remember how it got this way
Head hurts gut burns stomach churns you're out of cigarettes
Phone starts ringing boss is freaking another job will be lost
Smarten up pull it together and stop feeling sorry for yourself

Someone comes knocking at the door but no clue who it could be
A needed distraction perfect timing it's just what the doctor ordered
Return to the land of the living answer the door grateful for a new beginning
Instead staring down the barrel of a gun another soul has just been murdered

~~ ֎ ~~

Police canvassing lots of questioning yellow crime scene taped up everywhere
The neighbors stare nobody cares barely knew you they all heard nothing
A pair of eyes in disguise horrified by whom they wrongfully identified
Another case of mistaken identity..a person sitting..alone drinking..quietly crying
