Hello friends! I already told you about the wonderful Gorky Park (https://steemit.com/photography/@zvezda51/a-walk-in-the-gorky-park-or-the-kharkov-disneyland-8), but today we will go to another park, no less beautiful.
Shevchenko Park is a real symbol of the city, its zest. The history of the garden begins in 1804, when the first trees were planted here by the founder of the Kharkiv National University Karazin, after whom the university was named. The garden fits into the existing oak grove, which was then on the outskirts of the city. The upper part of it became a landscape park, and the lower part became a botanical garden. The first name that the founding fathers gave the park was the University name.
Four years later, an astronomical observatory was erected in the garden, where one could observe the stars, the moon and of course make wishes during the stargazing. And in 1896 in the park was opened Kharkov Zoological Garden - the first in Ukraine and the third in the entire Russian Empire. Today, the Kharkov Zoo is also in the lead, being one of the best in the country (currently under reconstruction).
In 1935 the garden was renamed in honor of the great Ukrainian poet, Kobzar Shevchenko, whose monument was solemnly opened on the central alley of the garden.
