Sebastes miniatus is a species of rockfish known by the common name Vermilion Rockfish. Other names may also be Vermilion Seaperch, Red Snapper, and Red Rock Cod. It is native to the waters of the Pacific Ocean off western North America from Baja California to Vancouver Island.
The colour of Vermilions vary greatly depending on its age and where it is living. Bright red in colour for the most part and covered with black and grey mottling on its side and back.
These are very pretty fish and excellent subjects for photography. Similar to other rockfish such as Canary and Brown Rockfish they tend not to shy away from divers especially the older Vermilions you may encounter. These fish can live at great depths but most reside within recreational limits above 40 meters (130 ft.)
As with all rockfish be patient and take your time when looking to compose a shot, let them come to you.
Thanks for reading.
