| The Television Tower, it's nickname is Alex, in Berlin is with 368 meters the highest building in Germany and second tallest within the EU. The tower is a symbol of the city. It was built in 1969, but besides broadcasting it also carried another purpose. During the cold war the Soviet Union used the tower to spy on the west. The view reaches even to the former American NSA spy station Teufelsberg, hidden in the forest Grunewald. The view from up there remains fantastic also having a meal in the restaurant in these heights is a unique experience. | Der Fernsehturm, den die Berliner Alex nennen, ist mit 368 Metern das höchste Gebäude in Deutschland und das zweithöchste innerhalb der EU. Der Turm ist ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Er wurde 1969 fertiggestellt, doch neben dem Broadcasten hatte er zu Beginn noch einer weitere Funktion. Während des kalten Krieges wurde der Fernsehturm von der Sowjetunion genutzt, um die Aktivitäten des Westen im Auge behalten zu können. Der Blick reicht, natürlich abhängig von der Wetterlage, auch bis zur früheren Abhöranlage Teufelsberg der Amerikaner (der NSA). Der Ausblick von dort oben bleibt fantastisch, auch eine Mahlzeit in diesen Höhen im Restaurant des Turms ist ein einzigartiges Erlebnis. |
