The city Urubici is located in the state Santa Catarina in the south of Brazil. The region has an important indigenous history and the name Urubici is still a heritage from the Xokleng tribe that habited this region. It is a very calm city with a lot of natural wonders. The region is part of the highlands in Santa Catarina (the locals call it "Serra Catarinense") and is 915m over sea level.
The highlight is the mountain "Morro da Igreja" and the stone formation with a big hole. You can go there by car, what i recommend because all touristic points are around the city. It helps a lot to get around. Just pass at the ICMBio or call to get the free authorisation to visit the viewpoint and than you are ready to go. The view form the 1822m high lookout is great.
On good days it is possible to see till the 100km far ocean.
The stone formation looks like a big window and has a circumference of about 30m.
I arrived very early at the viewpoint and i found some frost in the shadows. During winter time temperature drops below zero. Who thought it can be that cold in Brazil?
Close to the city i visited the Avencal waterfall. I visited the 100m waterfall from the viewpoint above but it is also possible to do a hike to get to the part down.
Morro do Campestre is about 7km far from the center of Urubici. I paid 5R entrance fee and it is a short hike to the top. There is an other strange rock formation and a great view over the place. Through the window you can see a river and strong greenish fields.
I love the region because of the beautiful Pine Trees and cattle.
I never have seen a green like this! No Photoshop!
The seeds of the Pine Tree are delicious. In restaurants they serve many local dishes with the pine tree seeds. Look for "Pinhão"
The waterfall Cascata Véu de Noiva is also outside of the city Urubici. The water runs slowly over the big stones till the 62m below lake.
Close to the center of Urubici i stayed at the Cambuim Cabanas Refúgio. Just a few meters behind my cabin there are four smaller waterfalls with natural swimming pools. Must be great to take a bath in summer.
I left Urubici and took the probably most famous serpentine road of Brazil. It is really great fun to take this road. But before you drive all the way down take a moment at the lookout at the beginning of the descent. There you meet these little fellows...
The Coatis are very curious and do everything to get our food and they are not coming alone...
Enjoy the view before taking the street Serra do Rio do Rasto.
Beside the serpentine road are a few frozen waterfalls. I had a great time there!
