The Great Barrier Reef - unpublished images

The Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world. This great barrier reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in Northeastern Australia. The reef, extends over approximately 2600 kilometers in length, can be distinguished even from space.

And it is very difficult to define its exact extent, although experts believe that begins near the latitude 9°S, south of Papua New Guinea, and continues southeast to the latitude 24°S, mostly as a line parallel to the coast of southern Queensland. Nor is it a continuous line of reef but that is made up of more than 2000 individual reefs and almost 1000 islands.

Due to its high biodiversity, its waters too clear, and their easy accessibility, the reef is a popular destination among diving enthusiasts.

The cities of the coast of Queensland offer some travel by boat to the beautiful reef daily. The Great Barrier Reef is sometimes referred to as the living being in the world.

On the stunning structures that extend for miles, it builds up one of the largest concentrations of diversity on the planet. A large area of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Great Barrier Reef was declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in the year 1981. It has an area of 34 000 870 hectares.
