The Bridge of the Ottoman Empire

Stari Most

The Stari Most (old bridge) is one of most recognizable landmark in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is an amazing example of ancient Ottoman architecture in the Balkans.

It's located in the town of Mostar and crosses the river Neretva. Built around 1557, it took nine years to complete. It was bombed and destroyed on the 9th of November, 1993 during the Croat-Bosnian war. It was later reconstructed and rebuilt and was opened to the public again in July 2004.

Exploring the areas of the bridge, you can see unrestored buildings riddled with machine gun bullet holes. The tragedy that is the Balkan Wars is clearly visible even to this day.
