Living on the street is tough as a Thailand street dog. For a while, especially when they are young, people will look after them a bit - as a puppy people may actually invite you onto their land or in their yard.
But more often then not, when the dog starts acting like a dog and doing things such as chewing on something or digging in the dirt, they become a nuisance and are discarded. They do what they can to survive such as opening trash bags for food or eating scraps off the ground from kind strangers.
But then the skin diseases set in and people are a lot less likely to touch them or even let them near them. Such is the case with our latest friendly girl who is in pretty rough shape.
While she isn't so sick to be beyond "repair" this friendly lady has horrible skin disease and mange and has scratched herself due to fleas to the point where her skin is raw, cracked, broken, and bloody. It is only a matter of time before these would become infected and remain as such until it will eventually kill her.
Despite her terrible condition, this is actually a pretty easy situation for us to deal with if we can get to it before the wounds get infected and / or have a great deal of parasites to deal with. Mostly it just requires a relatively inexpensive injection and some wound cleaning. You have to be very careful with the bathing as this doggo doesn't know us very well and doesn't realize that we are trying to help it.
So far she has been very cooperative and seems to be very happy simply to have food and a safe place to lie down. It really is crazy how much the smallest amount of compassion is greatly appreciated by these sad animals. This will likely require long-term care as the skin and coat will require great deal of time to repair and regrow. Hopefully this story will have a happy ending that results in a forever home.
