Epic Latvian Nature

I've been living in Latvia for almost 2 years and have enjoyed my time here immensely. The landscape has so much to offer. There are forests everywhere and the cities are filled with parks and green spaces. My boyfriend and I visited Kemeri national park recently and it was epic. We both had heard about it and decided to take advantage of the bright sunny day to explore.

We live in Latvia's largest and most popular city Riga. It's modern and hip and has everything one could ever need. Most of the Latvian population lives here, the others are spread out in smaller cities and throughout the vast countryside.

We hopped on a train with our bicycles from Riga and in just 45 minutes we were transported to a different world. The place we visited is called the Kemeri bogs and it is a swampy type forest filled with bonsai pine trees and lots of moss. The path begins through a forest then takes you onto a wooden path that leisurely leads you through the landscape. Only wood separates you from the muddy waters of the Kemeri bogs.

This particular area of Latvia used to be a place where people came to heal and rejuvenate. It is believed that the mud from the bogs has healing powers. In addition to the magical mud, there is also a sulfur spring! Sulfur waters are also known for their healing and beautifying abilities.

Once we emerged from the watery terrain we explored the city of Kemery and visited the old sanatorium. I love the idea of a sanatorium, a place where people come to feel better, to retreat, to feel alive again. The building was massive and pearly white. It is being remodeled now so I will definitely visit again once it's finished.

Since the lockdowns and travel restrictions, I've come to love staying in one place, one country. There are so many beautiful spots in Latvia and most are just a short train ride away. I'm really looking forward to visiting more Latvian forests, cities, and towns this summer.

Hope you're enjoying springtime.
Best,
Michelle
