This is one of the spiritual tourism destinations in Medan, a very unique Catholic church. Architecturally, the building of Graha Santa Maria Annai Velangkanni is almost like a Hindu temple. At first this church is for Tamil Catholics in Medan, and in its journey is open for all people.

The name Annai Velangkani, meaning Mother of Velangkanni, was made the name of the church and was an offering to the Virgin Mary who had appeared on the coast of Velangkanni, Tamil Nadu, India in the 17th century.
