The Ascension Bay Permit Tournament - It's all about the kids of Punta Allen

Hey Steemitoids!

In my little village on the Fantastical Caribbean Coast of Mexico, as seen in my introductory post we host a Fishing Tournament once a Year.

Punta Allen is known to be the "Permit Capital of the World", the Permit or Palometa being one of the toughest, smartest fish to try and catch in Salt Water Fly Fishing. There are people who have tried for decades to catch one of these fish and every year around April or May, a bunch of Permit crazy fishermen come from all over the world to see who can catch one (if they're very lucky) of these elusive creatures.

The point of the Tournament is to raise funds to educate and support the children of Punta Allen, and to help them grow up to be more aware of the fragility and importance of their environment- the Waters of Ascension Bay.

As far as miniscule mexican towns go, Punta Allen is somewhat unique for having an infrastructure of tourism dedicated to do a very specific and low-impact type of tourism - fly fishing. Fly fishing may seem to be destructive, since- you're going out with the specific purpose of hooking a fish on a line and dragging them all the way to a boat, just to have a look at them and let them go again, but the implications are actually wonderfully positive.

An angler will pay up to 5000 USD to fish for a week in our Bay. Paying that kind of money ensures that the fish in Ascension Bay are strictly protected and the are of much higher value to the locals alive, than they are netted. It's exactly this give-and-take that means Ascension Bay is one of the few worldwide fisheries that are growing in fish-numbers.

Local Angler "Mr Sandflea" is the boss when it comes to Permit Fishing. Here are two of his catches

The tournament has been responsible for funding various necessary projects for the kids of Punta Allen, like the donation of a high quality sand and coastal-air proof wheelchair for Karlita, our local 12 year old Superstar who was born with a severe form of Spinal Bifida. It's also been responsible for donating a braille machine, walker, a new playground, solar lights and air-conditioning in the sweltering classrooms, pens, pencils and drawing materials among much, much more!

Education raises awareness, awareness demands action and action fixes the world. :)

That's it!
