Picture perfect: The city you should visit!

Dear Steemies,

Weather in the Netherlands is as changeable as the mood of a woman (do not be insulted: Dutch proverb). Thanks to that I suffer from this huge cold despite it is being freaking summertime over here. So yesterday I felt like two elephants were shrouded in my nasal cavities and that made me a little moody. My lovable boyfriend decided to take me out for an evening stroll to get some fresh air. And that stroll results in this post. So on today’s program is the city Utrecht.

When I was nineteen I moved from my little home town to the big city. That is now six years ago and ever since Utrecht is capable of surprising me every single stroll through the city. That is what I love the most about Utrecht, all those ancient features make the city one big treasury in which you wants to keep digging for sure.

What do you have to know about Utrecht?

  • Utrecht is the fourth biggest city in the Netherlands with approximately 350.000 inhabitants;
  • Utrecht is centrally situated what makes it the biggest train junction of the country;
  • Utrecht is a hotspot for pretty students. Not only because some big universities are located here, but also because the whole city is equipped for them with some fancy eateries and bars;
  • Utrecht has a rich history which is noticeable by the ancient Dom-tower, canals and old wharfs.

Astonishing fact (that even I did not know until I read it now):
Calling an inhabitant of Utrecht ‘Utrechtenaar’ is insulting, because it refers to the homosexual affair of the 18th century. In that time homosexuals met each other behind the Dom-church and as soon they were caught, they were sentenced to death. These homosexual people were later called ‘Utrechtenaren’. So straight people these days do you call ‘Utrechter’, not ‘Utrechtenaar’. (Note: times has changed for the good and we are one of the most open-minded and tolerant countries of the world. There was even a gay pride canal parade in Utrecht a few months ago.)

Okay, I am not going to bother you with more little facts about the city. However, I will write a post about the history of Utrecht for the interested among us. For now I hope you enjoy my pictures of the city as much as I did yesterday evening! :)

‘Groetjes’,

Jessie
