Irish Landscape Shots By Drone [Video] : Behind The Camera

Can you tape a GoPro to a Drone? I thought it would be easy.

It was almost too windy to take the drone out this day, the dam is 370 m above see level and the drone might have been 100 m above this which may have caused the strong winds.

Spelga Dam (Irish: Speilgeach) is located in the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland, less than a 20 minute drive from my childhood home. The scenery in the short clip below looks like this for miles around.

I taped the GoPro to the DJI Phantom 3 to try and get a 4K shot as I don't think you can buy a 4K camera from DJI that is compatible with this drone.

I didn't think about how the GoPro would affect the centre of gravity of the drone mid flight, it was wayyy off and the drone became unstable and started shaking violently immediately, I think it still can work if I centre it correctly.

It looked pretty similar to the effect of a brick being thrown into a washing machine on full speed, which you should google if you haven't already. The drone camera we have films at 1440p I believe which still is good quality but it ain't got nothing on 4K. Maybe I'll stick my iPhone on it for 4K, that would do the job!

All jokes aside this location is actually pretty cool with some nice history surrounding it. we get our drinking water from here and there are still wild trout living in the water.

The Dam was built in the 1950's, there was just one problem. There was a small village located in the valley which had to be evacuated in order to build the dam and flood the area. They were told to leave and that was that. There was little that these people could do, they would have lived in simple little stone cottages and would have been poor farmers of some kind.

It has a catchment area of 1,340 acres (5.4 km2) and can hold 2,700,000 m3 of water when full. More than enough to submerge a small village in fact...

This final clip is my favourite, it turned out just right. I may edit many more clips into a couple minute long video, I like that format a lot.

Which clip is your favourite?

If you want to see more of this part of the world I made a drone video very close to this area last year.

All feedback is appreciated!
