AERIAL VIEWS OF MT. KILIMANJARO

Kilimanjaro July 2005 001.jpg

On a flight from Nairobi to Johannesburg we were treated to a close-up view of the summit of Kilimanjaro courtesy of the SAA pilot who was obviously ahead of schedule and had to kill some time. This was less than 30 minutes into the 4 hour flight. We were passing on the Western side of the mountain when the pilot announced that he was banking to the left and circling Mt Kilimanjaro in an anti-clockwise direction. What a treat!

If one compares these photos with photos from the eighties and earlier, one can clearly see that the ice-cap is receding due to global warming.

Mt Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania on the border with Kenya and is the highest mountain peak in Africa (5,894 m – 19,340 ft) – (Credit: Collins Field Guide – National Parks of East Africa. Williams, Arlott and Fennessy).
