Sometimes, when we go to a beach town, we only pay attention to the sea, and we leave aside its streets, squares and other places that can be interesting, that transmit us some of the history and the vibe of the place.
A veces, cuando vamos a un pueblo con playa, sólo le prestamos atención al mar, y dejamos de un lado sus calles, plazas y otros sitios que pueden ser interesantes, que nos transmiten algo de la historia y la vibra del lugar.
In my recent visit to Ocumare de la Costa, Aragua state (Venezuela), although enjoying the beaches was my main goal, I also tried to gather some images of El Playón, the area where I stayed, to share a little about this area.
En mi reciente visita a Ocumare de la Costa, estado Aragua (Venezuela), a pesar de que disfrutar de las playas era mi objetivo principal, también traté de juntar algunas imágenes de El Playón, sector donde me alojé, para poder compartir aquí un poco sobre esta zona.
This town is geographically located in the foothills of Henri Pittier National Park, which has many mountains with cloud forests, but El Playón is a flat and rather hot area.
Esta población se encuentra geográficamente en las faldas del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier, que tiene muchas montañas con bosques nublados, pero El Playón es un área plana y bastante calurosa.
It had been several years since I had visited this town, its main streets look good, as I remembered them, but the others mostly have holes, broken sidewalks and other infrastructure problems, something I also remembered like that. As I say when I see situations like this, more love is needed! Both from the people who live there and from the government. This is a place with a lot of tourist potential and a gateway to some of the best beaches in Venezuela.
Hacía varios años que no visitaba este pueblo, sus calles principales lucen bien, como las recordaba, pero las demás en su mayoría tienen huecos, aceras rotas y otros problemas de infraestructura, algo que también recordaba así. Como digo cuando veo situaciones así, ¡hace falta más amor! Tanto de la gente que allí habita como de los gobernantes. Este es un lugar con mucho potencial turístico y puerta de entrada a algunas de las mejores playas de Venezuela.
Obviously, the crisis that the country has gone through in the last 10 years, affected this place like any other, and although there are signs of economic recovery, the contrasts are still marked, for example in housing, there are many houses for sale or abandoned and next to them other beautiful and well maintained.
Obviamente, la crisis por la que ha atravesado el país los últimos 10 años, afectó este lugar como a cualquier otro, y aunque hay indicios de recuperación económica, los contrastes aún son marcados, por ejemplo en las viviendas, hay muchas casas en venta o abandonadas y al lado de ellas otras preciosas y bien mantenidas.
There is no lack of jocular details around here, Venezuelans are like that, I was walking down a street and I found some people sitting in front of their houses talking, on one of the trees on the sidewalk, there was this sign that you see in the photo below, and when I stopped to read it, they told me with laughter that they would be happy to tell me the news 😂.
No faltan los detalles jocosos por aquí, el venezolano es así, iba caminando por una calle y me encontré a unas personas sentadas frente a sus casas conversando, en uno de los árboles de la acera, estaba este letrero que ven en la foto que sigue, y cuando me paré a leerlo, me dijeron entre risas que con gusto me contaban las novedades 😂.
Nearby we came across a small pink house of the most “coquettish”, it turned out to be a beauty salon, and a little further a place dedicated to Bob Marley, which we never knew if it was a bar or something like that, because the days we were there we didn't see it open.
Cerca de allí nos topamos con una pequeña casita rosada de lo más “coquette”, resultó ser un salón de belleza, y un poco más allá un lugar dedicado a Bob Marley, que nunca supimos si era un bar o algo así, porque los días que estuvimos no lo vimos abierto.
The vegetation seen in this town is characteristic of the cloud forest of the coastal mountain range, there are many huge and long-lived trees, some still standing and others that surely lived more than 100 years.
La vegetación que se ve en este pueblo es la característica del bosque nublado de la cordillera de la costa, hay muchos árboles enormes y longevos, algunos en pie y otros que seguramente vivieron más de 100 años.
Of course, in the streets of El Playón you can see the signs that the sea is just around the corner, whether it be nets resting on a street corner, colorful shops and the inevitable mannequins on the sidewalks displaying beach attire.

Walking through the central part of this town, we find the Bolívar square, a space dedicated to the Liberator that is not lacking anywhere in Venezuela.
Al pasear por la parte céntrica de este pueblo, nos encontramos con la plaza Bolívar, espacio dedicado al Libertador que no falta en ningún lugar de Venezuela.
Nearby, crossing the main avenue and walking a block, is also the square dedicated to the precursor of independence, Francisco de Miranda, a very nice place, full of trees that alleviate the heat with their shade.
Cerca de allí, al cruzar la avenida principal y caminar una cuadra, está también la plaza dedicada al precursor de la independencia, Francisco de Miranda, un lugar muy agradable, lleno de árboles que alivian el calor con su sombra.
Both Bolivar and Miranda have a history in Ocumare de la Costa. The Liberator proclaimed the abolition of slavery here, on July 6, 1816, and a few years earlier, on April 27, 1806, Miranda's expedition arrived to these coasts with the intention of initiating actions to liberate the region from the Spanish yoke. Although he was unable to disembark because he was attacked by Spanish ships, he managed to escape and his attempt remained in history.
Tanto Bolívar como Miranda tienen historia en Ocumare de la Costa. El Libertador proclamó aquí la abolición de la esclavitud, el 6 de julio de 1816, y unos años antes, el 27 de abril de 1806, la expedición de Miranda llegó a estas costas con la intención de iniciar acciones para liberar a la región del yugo español. Aunque no pudo desembarcar porque fue atacado por buques españoles, él logró escapar y su intento quedó en la historia.
In front of this square is the church of El Playón or Capilla de la Virgen de la Begoña, according to what I read, it was built in the 80s.

Also in front of this square there is a bus stop, the ones that go to the city of Maracay, capital of Aragua state and the ones that go to Cata, the most famous beach of Ocumare de la Costa. But the days we were here, we could never go to the beach by bus, not even because it was a weekend and this service is supposed to work for tourists. My friend and I took cabs by stall, due to the scarcity of public transportation, together with the moto-taxis, are the options that exist for both visitors and locals.
También frente a esta plaza hay una parada de autobuses, los que van a la ciudad de Maracay, capital del estado Aragua y los que van a Cata, la playa más famosa de Ocumare de la Costa. Pero los días que estuvimos aquí, nunca pudimos ir a la playa en autobús, ni siquiera porque era fin de semana y se supone que debe funcionar este servicio para los turistas. Mi amiga y yo nos movilizamos en taxis por puesto, debido a la escasez de transporte público, junto a los moto-taxis, son las opciones que existen tanto para visitantes como para locales.
There are some lodges that have shuttle service to the beaches for their guests, such as this colorful bus.

When night falls in El Playón, most people go to the boardwalk, where there are fabulous views of the sea.

This boardwalk was recently remodeled, it had not yet been officially inaugurated when we went there, some details were missing, such as benches, lights, plants, etc., but it already looked very nice, especially the striking acoustic shell, which will surely become a place for cultural activities and entertainment.
Este malecón fue remodelado recientemente, aún no lo habían inaugurado oficialmente cuando fuimos, faltaban algunos detalles como la colocación de bancos, luces, plantas, etc., pero ya se veía muy bonito, sobre todo por la llamativa concha acústica, que seguramente se convertirá en un lugar para actividades culturales y de entretenimiento.
The area around the boardwalk is also a place to eat, on the street in front of it, there is a row of stalls with a variety of options, what we call here in Venezuela a “hunger street”. They offer hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas, fish dishes, among many other things, we ate there the first night.
Los alrededores del malecón son también un lugar para comer, en la calle que está enfrente, hay una fila de puestos con variadas opciones, lo que aquí en Venezuela llamamos una “calle del hambre”. But the second day we wanted something more elaborate and traditional, so I told my friend to go to a restaurant that has been here for years and where I always come, it is called Los Nonnos, and of course, it is owned by an Italian family, specifically from Sicily. Here they have a wide and varied menu, both with Italian dishes such as pastas and pizzas, as well as Venezuelan dishes.
Pero el segundo día quisimos algo más elaborado y tradicional, así que le dije a mi amiga que fuéramos a un restaurante que tiene años acá y al que siempre vengo, se llama Los Nonnos, y claro, es de una familia italiana, específicamente de Sicilia. Aquí tienen un menú amplio y variado, tanto con platos italianos como pastas y pizzas, como con platos venezolanos.
I wanted a fosforera, which is an intense soup that has fish, seafood, vegetables, spices... I had been wanting to taste it again for a long time, and that's what I ordered, and my friend opted for a pasta a la marinera. Both dishes were huge, they never ran out 😂, and we accompanied them with passion fruit juice.
Yo quería una fosforera, que es una intensa sopa que tiene pescado, mariscos, vegetales, especias… Tenía tiempo queriendo degustarla de nuevo, y eso fue lo que pedí, y mi amiga optó por una pasta a la marinera. Ambos platos eran enormes, no se acababan nunca 😂, y los acompañamos con jugo de parchita (maracuyá).
We had intended to eat dessert afterwards, but we really couldn't eat any more 😆, so we left it for the next day, and fortunately we got what we wanted, the famous coconut ice cream that comes in the shell of the fruit, a delight!
Teníamos intención de comer postre después, pero de verdad ya no podíamos más 😆, entonces lo dejamos para el día siguiente, y afortunadamente conseguimos lo que queríamos, los famosos helados de coco que vienen en la cáscara de la fruta, ¡una delicia!
