Getting to know new places, even if it is for work reasons, is something that excites me almost like traveling for vacation, for pleasure, so every time I have gone to faraway places to do some work, I have tried to take my camera to see what interesting things I could capture in my free time. On this occasion I bring some images that I took some time ago when I visited Apure, in the Venezuelan plains, where I went to report on some agricultural production and species conservation projects.
Conocer lugares nuevos aunque sea por motivos laborales, es algo que me entusiasma casi como viajar por vacaciones, por placer, por eso cada vez que he ido a sitios lejanos para realizar algún trabajo, he procurado llevar mi cámara para ver qué cosas interesantes podía capturar en los momentos libres. En esta ocasión traigo unas imágenes que hice cuando hace tiempo visité Apure, en los llanos venezolanos, donde fui a hacer reportajes sobre algunos proyectos agroproductivos y de conservación de especies.
In this region nature stands out, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful, not to mention the details, look at this trunk below, I don't know what tree it is but its shape looks like abstract art.
En esta región la naturaleza destaca, los paisajes son increíblemente bellos, y ni hablar de los detalles, miren a continuación este tronco, no sé qué árbol es pero su forma parece arte abstracto.
On this trip I visited a hacienda and a small hamlet, in both the people live dedicated to agro-productive activities. They grow crops, have cattle, chickens, etc., and raise fish in ponds for consumption and for sale. There is also an alligator and turtle conservation project that has been helping to repopulate the region with these endangered animals for several years.
En este viaje visité una hacienda y un pequeño caserío, en ambos las personas viven dedicadas a lo agroproductivo. Siembran, tienen ganado, gallinas, etc., y crian peces en lagunas para su consumo y para vender. También hay un proyecto de conservación de caimanes y tortugas que lleva varios años contribuyendo a repoblar la región de estos animales que se encuentran en peligro de extinción.
After finishing filming the first day, as we were leaving the hacienda, we came across the sunset and a group of donkeys. I particularly love these animals (my grandmother had a donkey and I adored her), and seeing them roaming free seemed like a beautiful scene to me.
Después de terminar las grabaciones del primer día, cuando íbamos saliendo de la hacienda, nos topamos con el atardecer y un grupo de burros. Particularmente me encantan estos animales (mi abuela tenía una burra y yo la adoraba), y verlos libres por ahí me pareció una bella escena.
Later the cattle appeared looking at us with attention, in Apure is where their breeding is most developed in Venezuela. These photos were a bit moving because we were in the car but I was fascinated by the colors they have.
Más adelante apareció el ganado mirándonos con atención, en Apure es donde más se desarrolla su cría en Venezuela. Estas fotos salieron un poco en movimiento porque íbamos en el carro pero me fascinaron los colores que tienen.
When it was almost dark and we were on our way to the inn in a nearby village, we came across several lagoons along the road and stopped to watch the spectacle of the sunset.
Cuando casi estaba oscureciendo y nos dirigíamos a la posada que quedaba en un pueblo cercano, nos cruzamos con varias lagunas por la carretera y nos detuvimos a observar el espectáculo del atardecer.
The next day we returned to the hacienda to interview several people about the project to raise caimans and turtles for reinsertion into the wild. The weather was rainy and the horses we saw around were enjoying it.
Al día siguiente volvimos a la hacienda para entrevistar a varias personas sobre el proyecto de cría de caimanes y tortugas para su reinserción en la naturaleza. El clima estaba lluvioso y los caballos que vimos por allí lo estaban disfrutando.
I took the opportunity to take some pictures holding some of the protagonists of the day, the Orinoco caiman (Crocodylus intermedius) and the arrau turtle (Podocnemis expansa). They also breed terecay turtles (Podocnemis unifilis).
Aproveché para hacerme unas fotos sosteniendo a algunos de los protagonistas del día, el caimán del Orinoco (Crocodylus intermedius) y la tortuga arrau (Podocnemis expansa). También reproducen allí a las tortugas terecay (podocnemis unifilis).
On the way to the Orinoco caiman nests in this protected area, we came across a buffalo, they are really huge, so they instill some fear, but their countenance is very peaceful.
Camino a donde están los nidos de los caimanes del Orinoco en esta área protegida, nos topamos con un búfalo, de verdad son enormes, por lo que infunden algo de miedo, pero su semblante es muy pacífico.
We arrived near the caiman nests and while the cameraman was taking shots for the audiovisual report, I took some pictures for myself. In these serene lagoons surrounded by vegetation that invite you to cool off in the middle of the heat of the plains, caimans live, so it's not a good idea to even put your hands in there hahaha.
Llegamos cerca de los nidos de los caimanes y mientras el camarógrafo hacía tomas para el reportaje audiovisual, yo hice algunas fotos para mí. En estas serenas lagunas rodeadas de vegetación que te invitan a refrescarte en medio del calor llanero, viven los caimanes, así que no es una buena idea ni siquiera meter las manos allí jajaja.
On the sandy shores of the lagoons are many of the caiman nests monitored by the specialists of the breeding program of these reptiles. Look at this female, I barely distinguished her, she camouflages herself very well.
En las orillas arenosas de las lagunas se encuentran muchos de los nidos de caimanes monitoreados por los especialistas del programa de cría de estos reptiles. Vean a esta hembra, apenas la distinguí, se camuflajea muy bien.
Then, in the afternoon, we moved to another place, a small hamlet called El Zancudo, where we went to meet the people who were raising black pacu (freshwater fish) in some ponds they had made themselves.
Luego, en la tarde, nos trasladamos a otro lugar, un pequeño caserío llamado El Zancudo, allí fuimos a conocer a la gente que estaba criando cachamas (peces de agua dulce) en unas lagunas que ellos mismos hicieron.
In this rural community of Apure, life is very peaceful, people are dedicated to planting crops and raising animals such as cows, chickens, etc.
En esta comunidad rural de Apure la vida es muy tranquila, las personas se dedican a sembrar y a criar animales como vacas, gallinas, etc.
I took advantage of the breaks in the recordings and interviews to portray something of the daily life of El Zancudo.
Aproveché las pausas de las grabaciones y entrevistas para retratar algo de la cotidianidad de El Zancudo.
I saw these cute little calves but I didn't get too close to them so they wouldn't get scared and I could photograph them. It makes me sad to know the fate of many of them, I stopped eating meat years ago.
Vi a estos lindos becerritos pero no me les acerqué demasiado para que no se asustaran y así poder fotografiarlos. Me da tristeza saber el destino de muchos de ellos, hace años que dejé de comer carne.
The roads around here are very lightly traveled by vehicles, so the animals take over. I guess drivers who know the area know this and don't speed.
Las vías por aquí son muy poco transitadas por vehículos, entonces los animales se apropian de ellas. Supongo que los conductores que conocen la zona saben esto y no andan a alta velocidad.
Something that pleasantly surprised me while I was taking these photos is that a cart came by selling ice cream. I thought it was one of the commercial brands we all know in Venezuela but when I got closer I saw that it was a local brand, I bought it for me and for a little girl from the hamlet and when I tasted it, it was delicious, nothing to envy to the famous ice creams, it was super creamy, vanilla with chocolate topping.
Algo que me sorprendió gratamente mientras hacía estas fotos es que llegó un carro que vendía helados. Pensé que eran de las marcas comerciales que todos conocemos en Venezuela pero cuando me acerqué vi que era una marca local, compré para mi y para una niña del caserío y al probarlo estaba buenísimo, nada que envidiarle a los helados famosos, era súper cremoso, de vainilla con cubierta de chocolate.
We finished work at almost 5:00 pm and again we were caught by the sunset on the road.
Terminamos el trabajo casi a las 5:00 pm y nuevamente nos agarró el atardecer en la carretera.
We were going at slow speed because it was dark and the road was dirt and before reaching the asphalt we were lucky enough to see some small capybaras and also a fox.
Íbamos a baja velocidad porque estaba oscuro y la vía era de tierra y antes de llegar al asfalto tuvimos la suerte de ver a unos pequeños chigüires o capybaras y también a un zorro.
And so ended these two days of work in Apure state, where in addition to an incredible experience, I also had time to take these images home.
Y así terminaron estos dos días de trabajo en el estado Apure, donde además de una increíble experiencia, también tuve tiempo de llevarme estas imágenes a casa.
