I've always felt a special connection with the nature surrounding my home in Medellín. In a nearby grove, a family of giant iguanas lives, and their presence has woven a tapestry of coexistence and mutual respect between the neighborhood residents and these majestic creatures.
Siempre he sentido una conexión especial con la naturaleza que rodea mi hogar en Medellín.En una arboleda cercana, vive una familia de iguanas gigantes, y su presencia ha tejido una trama de convivencia y respeto mutuo entre los habitantes del vecindario y estas majestuosas criaturas.
The protagonist of this story is an 18-year-old iguana, whose imposing figure stands out among the branches and foliage. I affectionately call her "Mandarina" because her scaly skin blends with the colors of the vegetation. She, along with her family, has found a sanctuary in this small urban forest.
La protagonista de esta historia es una iguana de 18 años, cuya imponente figura se destaca entre las ramas y el follaje. La llamo cariñosamente “mandarina”, por su piel escamosa que se mezcla con los tonos de la vegetación. Ella, junto a su familia, ha encontrado un santuario en este pequeño bosque urbano.
The neighbors have adopted a routine of care for these iguanas. We offer them fresh lettuce, which they eagerly devour, and we ensure that their home remains safe and free from threats. In return, they gift us moments of wonder and the opportunity to observe wildlife up close.
"Mandarina" has become a sort of community pet. Despite her size, there is nothing to fear from her. She moves with a grace that belies her large stature, and her eyes seem to observe everything with ancient wisdom.
Los vecinos hemos adoptado una rutina de cuidado hacia estas iguanas. Les ofrecemos lechuga fresca, que devoran con gusto, y nos aseguramos de que su hogar permanezca seguro y libre de amenazas. En retorno, ellas nos regalan momentos de asombro y la oportunidad de observar de cerca la vida silvestre.
“Mandarina” se ha convertido en una especie de mascota comunitaria. A pesar de su tamaño, no hay nada que temer de ella. Se mueve con una gracia que desmiente su gran estatura, y sus ojos parecen observar todo con una sabiduría antigua.
This coexistence has taught everyone in the neighborhood an invaluable lesson about respecting life in all its forms. We have learned that even in the city, we can live in harmony with nature. The iguanas, for their part, seem to understand that this place is a safe haven where they can live without fear of the dangers they would face elsewhere.
Esta convivencia ha enseñado a todos en el vecindario una lección invaluable sobre el respeto a la vida en todas sus formas. Hemos aprendido que, incluso en la ciudad, podemos coexistir en armonía con la naturaleza. Las iguanas, por su parte, parecen entender que este lugar es un refugio seguro, donde pueden vivir sin miedo a los peligros que enfrentarían en otros lugares.
