Jogja Fashion Carnival 2022

On Saturday when I was walking through Malioboro street with my mom, we saw the roads were suddenly packed with people who either stood or sat on the pavement. We asked a stranger next to us and she told us that there is the Jogja fashion carnival show in about 10 minutes. Thankfully, we still have a couple more hours before my mom’s departure. So, we decided that we would see the carnival and see what it had to offer.

Apparently we were close to the main stage where these people would perform some type of dance in front of the officials. I wasn’t sure if the king/governor was present, I couldn’t really tell but I heard someone was giving a speech from the stage. By the way, the city where I live now is a special territory where the governor isn’t chosen but appointed through hereditary from the king to the family; think of it like a small version of the British monarchy. This event is also held to celebrate the inauguration of the governor and the deputy governor (which is also from the royal family).

It was our first time watching a fashion carnival show. From the speaker, I heard there are about 23 art studios that participate in this show. They will present clothing with different themes that mainly represent culture. In this city, they take pride in their culture and history so almost every event here is often about cultural events. It shows that even the first line of this show was a marching band where they wore the local’s traditional clothing that you can see below.

Right after the marching band, there were the contestants with their fashion creation. They all look heavy and pretty grand. The models are all tall and they wore it with pride. Some of these even look straight from Thailand instead of Indonesia.

Although some definitely incorporate Indonesia's ornament such as small temples, and just overall culture transformed into clothing. But when I saw it, I was strangely reminded of Thailand’s national costume rather than Indonesia's one. As the show progressed, I started seeing more and more Indonesia’s ornaments and costumes.

The first spot that I got was not a good one. It was packed with tourists and just people seeing the events. That's why my picture didn't really do any justice to these performers. My mom and I decided to move a bit further and we eventually saw a clear shot of these models with their costumes. Some of these have interesting themes and ways to illustrate the theme of the events.

The costumes were intricate and despite drizzling, they seemed to be somehow water resistant. In this fashion carnival, the models aren’t only children and adults but there are older adults like this grandpa below. His group has Metamorphosis theme which basically illustrates a human transformation.

My most favorite costume is anything that has wings on it. They looked really grand and made me wonder how long it took to make one costume like that. The head piece is often intricate too. Some of them even attach miniature temples or just detailed flowery pieces. The makeup that they use is also matching with their costume that they wear.

Some of the models were friendly and just smiled all the time. It was really nice to see them wearing the beautiful costume with that personality that they show to us. It makes the costume even more appealing. My camera also captures their micro expressions now and then.

Some of them look pretty tired too which is understandable because they even still have to walk a bit far in that weather. But a lot of them just smiled all the time because there were many cameras pointing out to them. A lot of people were wanting to take pictures with them.

There’s this model that looks really pretty. They(I am not sure if the model is she/he) but anyway, the costume they wear looks pretty and their make up and friendly look complements it. The group that they were with were also wearing nice costumes and they were all tall with a fun personality.

There was also this scary costume that made a little kid just a few feet away from me screamed.

This “scary” group was straight out of Maleficent's movie. I overheard someone say, “ look, I hope it’s good maleficent”. I just laughed and proceeded to take pictures of it. One of the girls wears an octopus costume that looks very detailed and heavy. Her looks complement it too and it makes the octopus look less scary than it should.

My mom also took pictures with them and she asked me to take pictures with this “maleficent” crowd. They were really nice and were not rushing either. The Maleficent's group was the last part of this carnival.

Thankfully, we only have to walk about 10 minutes to the train station. I guess I was so lucky to see that when I was around the area. Although my housemate told me that I missed a lot of events because during this week, the city is organizing plenty of cultural events that are worth visiting.
